“Hey, handsome,” Austin’s mom, Yvette, greeted him with a wink. “Coffee?”

Matthew was tucked into his favorite booth at The Finer Diner, a nearly famous local business that Austin’s mother had built and maintained with nothing but her own two hands and a lot of love. The place had started out as a 1950s throwback, complete with exposed stone walls and red leatherette booths, but over the years, Yvette had restored the place and changed the décor to reflect a classic art deco sensibility.

“People love a dive,” Yvette had explained to Matthew once. “But they also don’t want their asses to stick to the booth.”

Yvette kept a clean shop and served food that bordered on gourmet. It had been a wonderland when he was a kid and offered unlimited mashed potatoes. Home-cooked meals had been few and far between at his house.

Ever since he could remember, every Thursday Matthew had come to The Finer Diner to shoot the shit with Yvette and some of Austin’s cousins. All the Ames kids ended up here at some point, working summer jobs or to pick up quick cash after school. Yvette tried to pretend that she could do everything from hostess to line cook, but she was always thrilled to bring in young fresh help. She’d never been known to turn away someone in need of a job—even, for a very short time after high school, Matthew himself.

Matthew had warm memories of the days he’d bussed tables under the watchful eye of Yvette. All these years later, he loved coming here and feeling that camaraderie. Yvette was another of his adopted parents. Unlike Robin with her gentle optimism, Yvette tended to be a little coarser in her kindness. He supposed that came from working as hard as she had, and he liked her no less for it.

“Hey, Yvette,” he said, giving her the full-wattage smile.

She pretended to swoon. “Honey, you have to be careful with that thing. You’re gonna cause car crashes.”

He laughed at the old joke between them. “I’ll pay for the damages.”

She poured him a full cup of coffee. “You came just in time. Austin is on his way back from the hospital.”

This was news to Matthew. He almost hadn’t come, figuring he’d avoid Austin and any new tasks he would demand of Matthew.

“I wouldn’t have asked him to leave Rio,” Yvette was saying. “But we’re swamped.”

Matthew breathed a small sigh of relief. If Austin was working he’d be able to eat and sneak away without the guilt trip.

“This whole thing is so messed up,” Yvette said suddenly, and Matthew was horrified to see tears in her eyes. “One moment and Rio’s whole life is changed.”

She got quiet and Matthew knew she was thinking about Austin, about her own son, in that situation. He wanted to assure her that it would be okay, that if there was anyone who could pull through, it was Rio.

But he didn’t know. He couldn’t comfort her—not about Rio. He’d made that choice, and he would stick to it.
